Trimming
Much has been discussed regarding barefoot trimming versus shoeing. While shoeing remains a pragmatic solution for many riding and performance horses, the truth remains that for some percentage of horses, barefoot is a perfectly viable solution. However, it is necessary that the horse is evaluated for suitability of being barefoot, given the demands that are placed on it. It is my practice to give honest advice and trimming that suits the individual, rather than a rigidly applied "named" trim.
Standard Shoeing
While many horses are perfectly able to be barefoot, the fact remains that there are valid reasons to shoe, namely, protection, traction or correction/remediation (or any combination of those). For the vast majority of horses that require shoeing, standard open heeled shoes of an appropriate profile is all that is needed.
However, it is not just a matter of attaching a semi-circular piece of steel to the bottom of a hoof. For long term soundness, the individual must be considered in terms of its intended use, conformation, physiology and biomechanics. For me this has been a lifelong study and passion.
Corrective/Remedial Shoeing
Sometimes, because of injury or disease, poor conformation, or other reasons, something more than standard shoes may be needed. This may range from a simple modification to an involved hard forged solution. I will always advise if I believe non-standard shoes will help tp prevent injury or disease, or in cases where a veterinarian is involved, I am happy to collaborate to achieve the best outcome.
